Remember Patrick Greene? He’s the atheist who alienated many in our own community, got help from Christians when he needed eye surgery, ignored the help given to him by atheists, told the Christian media that he had converted to Christianity, and then deconverted back? Yeah, that guy. He’s in the news again: He’s back to his old self and sued Mayor Julián Castro on Monday for his plans to participate in the National Day of Prayer event on City Hall… Read more
SourceFed featured a nice summary of Jeff Shott’s story. Jeff is the high school student who dressed up as Jesus for “Fictional Character Day” and got in trouble for it: (Thanks to Nicholas for the link!) Read more
Today, someone in a position to (hopefully) get the discriminatory bill, HB2051, to bite the dust, spoke out in a major way. Representative Zachary Wyatt, a Republican in the Missouri House held a Capitol news press conference today in which he publicly disclosed his sexual orientation and called on the GOP to end the legislation of the Sexual orientation bill, HB2051. Stand with me as a proud Republican, a proud veteran, and a proud gay man who wants to protect all kids… Read more
Sean Harris is the senior pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He’s in the news because of a sermon he delivered in conjunction with “Marriage Sunday,” an initiative intended to get out the vote for a proposed same-sex ban. He had some thoughts about gender roles and parenting that deserve a closer look [emphases mine]. So your little son starts to act a little girlish when he is four years old and instead of squashing that like a… Read more
Tennessee Technological University (TTU) requires all non-students who wish to speak (or preach) on campus to follow detailed regulations which require, among other things, a two-week advanced notice. The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals recently held (PDF) that a non-student evangelist — John McGlone — may challenge TTU’s campus speech regulations, and this is a big deal. So what’s going on here? First, realize that to bring suit in federal court, you have to have “standing.” The court determines… Read more
Bruce Grierson has a wonderful article in the June, 2012 issue of Psychology Today about the quiet atheists — the ones who don’t believe in a god but aren’t all that outspoken about it. They don’t debate religion or get into online battles. They just want to raise their children and spend time with their families — without religion. But even the “atheist at the breakfast table” doesn’t have it *that* easy: It’s risky to say anything categorically about atheists… Read more
Are there any shows that cover religion in a fair way? That is, they don’t push one particular belief system (or even faith in general) but offer somewhat a little more nuanced? Mark Oppenheimer argues that The Daily Show stands above the rest: Stewart comes at religion with buckets of derision, but I do not find him offensive, nor should anyone who enjoys comedy. Like so many of the best comedians, he is an equal-opportunity hater. Sometimes it’s atheists he… Read more

Atheist comedian Julia Sweeney (Letting Go of God) recently watched the movie Jesus Christ Superstar with her daughter Mulan. Since Mulan wasn’t raised with religious beliefs, a lot of the story was brand new to her…: Mulan and I watched it. I thought maybe it was a good way for her to learn about Jesus. HA. She was so bewildered. I realized that since she hasn’t been inculcated with religious behaviors, everything just seems weird to her. Things I would… Read more
