… and guess what they found? I hope you’re sitting down for this. It turns out David Barton just pulls a lot of stuff out of his ass. (But they said it more NPR-ly.) Here’s one example where Barton says the Constitution was taken “verbatim” from Scripture: NPR’s Elise Hu and Barbara Bradley Hagerty beg to differ: Barton says here that it’s “absolutely no surprise that so many clauses in the Constitution are literal, direct quotations out of the Bible”… Read more
***Update***: The slightly-altered PDF is now back up online. It’s now titled “Reject Teachers Who Exploit Position” … Every time the Christian Right says something crazy, liberals tend to quote them word-for-word, and the Christians get mad because their own words make them look silly. It’s a formula The Daily Show uses to perfection. So you can imagine how upset the Illinois Family Institute was the other day after I wrote about their back-to-school warnings for Christian parents. They’ve already… Read more
By accepting an invitation to speak at a book festival. That’s it. The Lord’s Day Observance Society said it was amazed by the invitation. President of the group, John Roberts, said: “He has got a name for himself and being invited to a place like the Western Isles, which is a stronghold Presbyterian area, I just find it amazing he should be invited to a place like that. “He has a personality that has reached certain heights but it just… Read more
One of the survivors of the Aurora shootings was Carli Richards — pictures of her wounds (warning: graphic) made the rounds in the days following the tragedy. Unlike some of the other first-hand accounts of survival, Carli’s may be unique because she’s an atheist (who has a Scarlet A tattoo near her left shoulder). She offers her own account of what happened here and granted an interview to Secular Woman: I almost gave thought to praying in the ambulance that… Read more
Last night, The Daily Show talked about Adam Smith’s video of himself driving through a Chick-fil-A drive-thru and berating the person taking his order for working there: The Daily Show with Jon StewartGet More: Daily Show Full Episodes,Political Humor & Satire Blog,The Daily Show on Facebook … Rachel Elizabeth, the employee who showed incredible patience during his video, gave an interview to FOX News Channel and said she accepted Smith’s apology: Read more
To continue the discussion on separation of church and state, Missourians have passed Amendment 2, which gives civilians the right to pray in public and requires schools to display the Bill of Rights. Among those provisions, the amendment also calls for the following (emphasis mine): • Ensures the right to pray individually or in groups in private or public places, as long as the prayer does not disturb the peace or disrupt a meeting • Prohibits the state from coercing… Read more
You know how S.E. Cupp wishes she were religious and would never vote for an atheist… despite being an atheist herself? I found the next worst thing: Atheists who hate it when other atheists point out the foolishness of religion. Luke Winkie recently wrote an article for Salon about a trip to a Creation museum in California and some of the commenters used the discussion thread as an opportunity to — wait for it — mock Creationists and ignorant thinking… Read more
American Atheists has issued a press release to express their sympathies for the victims and families of the recent Sikh temple shootings in Wisconsin: American Atheists wish to express condolences to the victims and families affected by the recent shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin. The shooting took place when temple members were reading scriptures and cooking food in preparation for the main Sunday service and community lunch. It came two weeks after a massacre at a Colorado movie… Read more
This may be the weirdest protest attempt I have seen in some time. Michael Leisner decided to burn a box of Honey Nut Cheerios in protest of General Mills’ pro-gay marriage stance. You should just watch the video (embedding disabled) to see how that worked out for him. One out of every eight boxes of cereal in the country are Cheerios. This is really the treat now for the homosexuals! And this is our protest of General Mills advocating same sex marriages…. Read more
We already know Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal‘s voucher program would give upwards of $11,000,000 to religious schools that teach complete nonsense. But what would those schools teach? Mother Jones’ Deanna Pan has a list of “14 Wacky ‘Facts’ Kids Will Learn in Louisiana’s Voucher Schools.” It’s exactly as messed up as you would expect… and I’m even ignoring all the Creationism stuff: 4. Africa needs religion: “Africa is a continent with many needs. It is still in need of the… Read more
