What kind of signs should God be sending us? Mr. Deity explains how he lets us know (or not know) of His existence: Love the Mormon bit at the beginning 🙂 Read more
Vjack asks a simple yet very interesting question: If I had to vote for one of two hypothetical candidates, would I be more likely to vote for a liberal Christian or a conservative atheist? … The liberal Christian would almost certainly be a better fit with my stance on many political issues than the conservative atheist. But of course, the conservative atheist would not be a victim of the sort of superstition afflicting the liberal Christian. So who would I… Read more
Sometimes, when you watch a video or read a blog by some religious idiot, you get mad. Sometimes you get deeply depressed. Sometimes you just giggle. This video below… it left me confused and, I guess, vaguely bothered. Just sort of a general bewildered puzzlement is how I would best describe it. Just watch Pastor Heath Mooneyham deliver his sermon/stand-up routine: This is my favorite part: Apparently his church group uses a very specific euphemism to explain naughty bits: … We got this symbol of carrots and doughnuts…. The American Family Association is putting out a documentary called Fed Up: The Uncertainty of America’s Future, presumably about the Federal Reserve and the financial markets and greed and money. There’s no IMDB information on it. It’s practically unsearchable online (at least that’s what my Google searches told me). It’s not even on the AFA’s own website or online store. It may very well exist as a figment of the AFA’s collective imagination, something you would pretty much expect a… Read more
There’s a new Secular Student Alliance affiliate starting at Auburn University — Montgomery and, like many new affiliates, they’re having some problems keeping flyers up. Sometimes they come down entirely. Other times, people just add their own commentary: Secretary Shane Williamson videotaped some of the carnage in one of the buildings on campus: Do you have any suggestions on what they could do to keep flyers up in the halls? On the brighter side, at least they seem to be… Read more
If Gregor Mendel was the Father of Genetics, Thomas Hunt Morgan, whose birthday we celebrate today, was the Godfather of Genetics. He was the first to win a Nobel Prize for genetics and, from his lab, several of his students went on to earn their own Nobel Prizes thanks in part to his mentorship. So what did he do that was so great? What makes him worthy of a new nerdy holiday? Morgan figured out so many of the basics… Read more
Over the past several years, various groups have created calendars featuring nude/semi-nude/fully-clothed skeptics to raise funds for their events or donate to charity. For the most part, it’s all in good fun. The models — I’ve been one myself. Not nude. You’re welcome. — volunteer to do it (and it’s exciting!), the organizations make a little money, the buyers enjoy the calendar. That’s the idea. Rebecca Watson, whose Skepchick/Skepdude calendars were pretty popular a few years back, is now asking… Read more

This is a guest post by Michael Tracey. He is a journalist in Brooklyn, New York. *** Last night the esteemed newsmagazine program 60 Minutes aired dueling interviews with both candidates for the presidency, Barack Hussein Obama and W. Mitt Romney. “What are the essential qualities of a leader?” the correspondents queried. “I wonder what you’ve learned from the history of presidents in the White House?” “Can you win this thing?” Eventually the topic turned to prayer, and Scott Pelley… Read more
