Lars Hedegaard, head of the Danish Free Press Society, was nearly the victim of an assassination attempt a few weeks ago. When the accusations about who tried to kill him began flying, Muslims extremists were at the top of the list. Hedegaard had made many remarks against Islam (many of them admittedly unfair and despicable) and, in a country where a newspaper’s cartoons featuring the Prophet Mohammad led to worldwide riots, they weren’t exactly unwarranted accusations. When the Vatican established Pope Benedict XVI’s Twitter account as @Pontifex (rather than @BennyRatz or something more Ratzinger-specific) I thought it was a smart move.
