Earlier this month, the British Columbia Humanist Association commissioned a poll to find out about the religious makeup of their province and how much support there is for secular values. What they found was remarkable: Only one in three British Columbians are religious. What’s more, nearly 30% of the population was atheist or agnostic. I became involved in secular activism over a decade ago when I started a Secular Student Alliance chapter at my college. I later ran for and got elected to their Board of Directors and ended up chairing that board for several years. If I hadn’t gotten involved with them, I don’t think I would ever have started this website (or written any books). The year I got involved with the SSA, we had under 50 college affiliates across the country. As I write this, there are around 400 chapters, including nearly 70 at the high school level. A number of campuses even run their own free conferences. It’s just a staggering amount of growth in such a short time and we have to keep it going while the momentum is on our side. The Australian Christian Lobby, basically the equivalent of a Christian Right group in America, uses the domain www.acl.org.au to espouse their anti-gay, anti-choice rhetoric. Okay, fine, their right… but I guess nobody told them they should also snatch up australianchristianlobby.org while they’re at it.
