Christian Preacher Thanks God for Sparing His California Home During a Wildfire

Christian worship leader and MAGA cultist Sean Feucht, the Bethel Church-affiliated singer who spent much of last year hosting COVID super-spreader concerts around the country (disguised as spiritual revivals), recently witnessed a wildfire near his California home.

Naturally, he thanked God for leaving his house standing.

“This is not far behind my house. As you can see, this is spreading pretty quickly,” he described. “Fire season has already started and this is way to[o] close to our house”

“The fire is contained thanks to Cal Fire and JESUS!!” Feucht testified.

I’m sincerely glad that Feucht’s home wasn’t destroyed; that’s a fate I wouldn’t wish on anyone. But while his update could be read as an expression of gratitude, thanking God in this instance makes me uncomfortable (even as a Christian myself) because countless others weren’t so lucky. Some firefighters were injured. People die in these disasters. It leads to obvious follow-up questions: Why did God choose to spare some people over others? Is God playing favorites? Or is a wildfire something that operates without agenda, destroying everything in its path regardless of what the homeowners believe?

Just like when survivors of other tragedies (like mass shootings) thank God for saving them, Feucht’s comments amount to a person thanking a serial killer for going after his neighbors. A more thoughtful person would at least recognize his gratitude might come across as a slap in the fact to those who suffered.
