It’s been a while since we’ve seen local action to repeal “blue laws” but one’s on the verge of taking place in Escambia County, Florida.
“Blue laws” basically prevent the sale of certain items like liquor on Sunday mornings. Why? Because Sunday morning is reserved for Jesus, dammit, and we can’t have any distractions like open stores that might lure people away from church.
In the case of Escambia County, alcohol can be sold between 6:00 a.m.-2:30 a.m. every day… except Sunday. That’s been true since 1989. But the rule may be discontinued. County officials are slated to discuss a repeal ordinance at a meeting this Thursday. If it passes, the Sunday prohibition would be gone.
The public record has no real mention of why this is happening other than to say the goal is to “streamline the permissible hours for sale or purchase, as well as to provide for uniform applicability throughout all unincorporated areas of Escambia County.” But, hey, whatever works.
It’s absurd to say alcohol is okay except on Sundays while also offering exceptions in two parts of the county where a hell of a lot of tourists buy alcohol. Let’s hope this ordinance passes without any controversy.
