Trump Credits “Miracles Coming Down from God” for His Alleged COVID Recovery

In a speech from his hospital room at Walter Reed Medical Center yesterday, Donald Trump claimed that God was sending him the cure for his COVID.

… If you look at the therapeutics, which I’m taking right now, some of them, and others are coming out soon that are looking like, frankly, they’re miracles, if you want to know the truth. They’re miracles. People criticize me when I say that, but we have things happening that look like they’re miracles coming down from God, so I just want to tell you that I’m starting to feel good…

You would think denying science when it comes to the virus would have given someone pause, but Trump is now denying the very science that could lead to his recovery.

God didn’t send Trump the antiviral drug regimen he’s currently on for the same reason God didn’t stop the virus from taking more than 208,000 American lives so far. God doesn’t have anything to do with a potent and deadly virus. Some nations have listened to the experts and made difficult decisions about shutting down the economy and requiring people to self-quarantine. Our Republican-led government chose not to. We’re paying the price for their delusions and negligence.

If Trump is able to make a recovery, it’ll be because scientists and researchers have been working for months (if not longer) to figure out how to defeat this virus. It’s because Trump has the best-available medical care — the same care his new Supreme Court pick will likely strip away from millions of Americans the first chance she gets.

But let’s not forget why he’s in this mess at all: Because he purposely chose to ignore those epidemiologists when he thought it would be politically advantageous to him. He didn’t care if his MAGA cultist followers got sick; as long as he appeared to be stronger than the virus, and as long as he could mock Joe Biden for wearing a mask, he didn’t bother taking any precautions. Now his whole party appears to be falling like dominoes.

It’s also telling who he’s relying on for his recovery. Don’t expect his circle of evangelical leaders to show up to pray around him like they do when they want a photo op. Trump is relying, finally, on experts who understand the virus.

If he gets through this, he should make sure that all Americans have access to the same kind of high-level health care and — perhaps more importantly — to the same expert information that he does. Failing to change his response to COVID after this week would just be further evidence of his utter incompetence. For now, it doesn’t look like he’s about to change his tune on anything.
