Christian preacher Andrew Wommack has said in the past that God will cure COVID-19 by turning off the virus receptors in our body, and that if you catch the virus, it’s only because you’re not really a devout Christian.
No wonder he held a massive in-person gathering over the July 4 weekend.
In a post on Facebook, he explained that after three months of obeying lockdown orders, he decided to violate the law by hosting an in-person Summer Family Bible Conference from June 29 to July 3.
Over 1,000 people were in attendance. (Another event, days later, brought together another 500 people.)
… We voluntarily complied for three months with all the instructions of our state government in an effort to do our part in fighting this plague. But I totally disagreed with the evaluation of our officials that the church and religious meetings were not essential…
… I have respectfully refused to comply with the artificial limit on the number of people who can attend. We are firmly in the “crosshairs” of our liberal state government. Liberty Counsel has agreed to represent us, and we are fighting back. I believe it is not only our constitutional right but our duty to stop this extreme overreach of government that allows people to riot and pillage but not assemble to worship the Lord.
Obviously, outdoor protests where just about everyone is wearing a mask is substantially different from indoor gatherings where we can’t assess compliance with COVID restrictions.
In any case, guess how his in-person gathering worked out?
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment now says that they’ve traced a COVID outbreak back to his Bible conference, “with seven staff members and fifteen attendees testing positive.” And those are just the people we know about! Who else did they come into contact with?!
A few days ago, Wommack addressed this issue by saying an upcoming “Healing is Here Conference” would be live-streamed only. Even he noted the obvious irony:
The county where we are located has seen an increase in Covid-19 cases and a few of our staff and attendees at our last conference have tested positive too. Our local health officials have expressed their concerns over this being a live, in-person event. I believe we have the Constitutional right to hold the event live, but I also do not want anyone to get sick if we can avoid it.
I know it seems ironic that I’d be canceling a healing conference due to a sickness outbreak. If it was just me, I believe that if I touch someone, they’ll catch my healing instead of me catching their sickness. But since the Covid-19 cases in this community have risen lately, I have to consider the safety and well-being of everyone involved. I know that God wants to heal Covid, just like every other disease, and he can do that no matter where you are!
So healing works… but everyone will get sick if we meet up… so too bad?
I don’t get it.
Either devout Christians can get sick or they can’t. Wommack won’t admit what the rest of us already know: The virus doesn’t care what you believe. But his delusion is so great that he’s already put nearly two dozen people — and perhaps many more — in danger. How many people will suffer because they fell for his preaching?
