… is called Venus Magazine. It used to cater to African-American gays and lesbians. But then the publisher, Charlene Cothran, became “redeemed” and is no longer gay. Now, the mission of the magazine has changed to the following: The new mission of Venus Magazine is to encourage, educate and assist those who desire to leave a life of homosexuality. Our ultimate mission is to win souls for Christ, and to do so by showing love to all God’s people. We… Read more
Darwin Day is over, but gasmonso at Religious Freaks tells us that the audiobook version of Charles Darwin’s The Origin of Species is now available for free downloading! It’s been available in libraries and bookstores for over a century and more recently as a free eBook on the Intertubes. Of course all of these solutions had one major flaw though. You needed to be literate and willing to read the book in the first place. Well those days are long… Read more
After a day in the Supreme Court and a flurry of articles written about the case, the Freedom From Religion Foundation (whose membership has recently spiked to over an astounding 9,100+) isn’t done yet. On Saturday, you can listen to Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor talk about their experience in court on Freethought Radio (The Mic 92.1 in Madison, Wisconsin). For the rest of us, we can download the podcast shortly thereafter. Also, this Sunday on ABC’s World News… Read more
I was mean to Bligbi earlier, but she has a posting that makes for very worthwhile reading. She refers to Bill Maher’s editorial (also a must-read) in Salon regarding the Christian Right’s crusade against the HPV vaccine because it gives girls a “license to engage in premarital sex.” Bligbi says: Honestly, what do you think they’d do if a disease was discovered that only threatened married women, but was preventable with a simple shot? They’d demand all us married women… Read more
Four years ago, the town of Walnut Creek decided to drop the word Easter from community events and the “Spring Bunny” came to life and the city held “Spring egg hunts.” They did this based on a complaint from a Jewish resident. And no one cared. It’s all part of making holidays more accessible for everyone, not just one religion. Michael Runzler wrote a letter to the editor to the Contra Costa Times yesterday (in a timely fashion) to argue… Read more
Here’s a perfect example of how not to participate in the Blasphemy Challenge: That was David Mills, author of Atheist Universe. Picking up dog shit with Bible pages. (And is that a little girl laughing in the background?! What is up with that? Why is she being told to take part in this, even if she is offscreen? If the roles were reversed and a little girl laughed as a Christian picked up dog shit with a Biology textbook, we’d… Read more
I was interviewed a while back for a piece in the March issue of Pages Magazine, the “magazine for people who love books.” Today, I go to check out their website… and I see this: Dear Pages Subscriber: On December 29, 2006, Advanced Marketing Services, Inc., which publishes Pages magazine, filed a voluntary petition under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. AMS is now conducting business as a debtor in possession under the supervision of the bankruptcy court…. Read more
The local CBS news affiliate in San Francisco did a very positive story on atheists in the Bay Area the other night. All praise Dave Kong, California’s state director for American Atheists! And his hair. His powerful, powerful hair. It owns me. By the way, if you go to the American Atheists website, there’s a video message from Ellen Johnson regarding the whole Paula Zahn debacle. (via IIDB) [tags]atheist, atheism, CBS, San Francisco, Bay Area, Dave Kong, California, American Atheists,… Read more
Lynn’s Daughter provides some insight into how fundamental Christians think. It’s not new, but it’s always entertaining. 5. There is a devil, and he is as real as you or I, and he is responsible for anything bad. Unless, of course, it’s just god testing your faith. (See next section on contradictions) There’s also a brief explanation on why abortion is bad but the death penalty is good. And why “They CAN’T shut up about it already.” [tags]Lynn’s Daughter, Christian,… Read more
