The latest edition of the Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice features an article about college atheists by John A. Mueller of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. (The article is free to access if you fill out a form.) In 2009, Mueller and colleague Kathleen Goodman published an article about “why colleges should embrace and acknowledge atheists on campuses nationwide.” The topic this time around: “Understanding the Atheist College Student:A Qualitative Examination.” Mueller spoke with 16 atheist undergraduate and graduate… Read more
Back in April, the Pew Hispanic Center released the results (PDF) of a nationwide poll showing that non-religious Latinos were growing faster than we might have imagined: As you can see from those images, 14% of U.S. Hispanics are religiously unaffiliated and more “Americanized” Hispanics are less religious than their foreign-born counterparts. NBCLatino reports on the findings: Timothy Matovina, a leading expert on Catholicism, says Latinos’ attitudes toward religion mirror the rest of the population, since the 19 percent say… Read more
I’ve been pretty harsh (with good reason) to Ernest Perce V, the Pennsylvania State Director of American Atheists, on this site. But he’s done something really awesome and it’s worth highlighting. The Greencastle-Antrim School District (Pennsylvania) school board begins its meetings with The Lord’s Prayer. Totally illegal. So Ernest and Carl Silverman (of the PA Nonbelievers) attended their last meeting a week ago. They recorded the prayer and then told the school board what the problem with it was: Then,… Read more
The Freedom From Religion Foundation planned to run their “It’s Time to Quit the Catholic Church” ad in the Daily Standard newspaper (based in Celina, Ohio) this Saturday. They paid for the ad a month ago (click to enlarge PDF): But earlier this week, they were told by the publisher that the paper would no longer run the ad. What was the problem? Was it too political? Too opinionated? It can’t be that. The same paper ran a full-age ad from… Read more
Readers, friends, let’s talk. With all of this talk about what is and isn’t a “legitimate” rape, I think we’ve lost sight of who the real victim is: Todd Akin. I mean the poor guy has one slip of the tongue, and the whole country’s all over him! Wait… wait hold on, I’m sorry. I got that wrong. Akin actually has quite a history of douche-baggery, and his comments are not only infuriating, but they speak to the larger, nationwide issue… Read more

Ridgeland High School in Rossville, Georgia has a problem. The football team is led by someone who thinks it’s his duty to preach to students instead of just coaching them. According to a letter (PDF) the Freedom From Religion Foundation sent the Walker County Schools superintendent: … on game day, [coach Mark] Mariakis takes the football team to a local church for dinner. We understand that at these events the church’s preacher sermonizes to the players “about the Christian religion”…… Read more
Tonight on Nightline, there’s a pretty positive segment about Camp Quest Northwest: ***Update***: Video is below: video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player … Located just north of Seattle, Camp Quest Northwest is a summer camp for atheists or children of atheists, self-described “freethinkers” or people not otherwise traditionally religious. “We would encourage them to read, to go to church,” said Chuck Wolber, one of Camp Quest Northwest’s founders. “The best way to become an atheist is to study the Bible, and… Read more
