Christian Mommy: Our Obesity Problem Could Be Solved if Women Stopped Working

Christian blogger and professional mommy-shamer Lori Alexander (a.k.a. “The Transformed Wife”) has used her platform to decry all things feminist. It’s no surprise that she’s doing it again. But this time, perhaps for lack of new ideas, she decided to go after… fat people.

In the post, titled When People Were Thinner, she writes:

… Obesity rates among adults in the US in 1950 was 10 percent. In 2020, it was 42.4 percent of adults. It has increased 26 percent just since 2008. Learning to eat in moderation is greatly needed in this country. Up to 80 percent of people dying from Covid are obese. Most obese people have comorbidities.

What has changed since the 50s and 60s? Fast food is abundant now and so is processed food. Many women are no longer cooking for their families. Sadly, many families are broken these days. The mothers aren’t home during the days, or the parents are divorced. All of this has contributed to the obesity we are seeing in our country.

How does a woman who wants to lose weight lose the weight? Check out intermittent fasting. Get rid of all of the junk food in your home. Eat whole, healthy food. Learn to cook from scratch. Be busy at home. Take long walks every day if you can. Eat in moderation. Remind yourself that you can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens you. You are dead and freed from sin! Read Romans 6 and 8 over and over again until you believe it. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, a fruit of the Spirit is self-control. Teach your children self-control. This is a gift that you give them.

While it’s fair to place blame on fast food, processed food, and certain bad habits, the idea that we should blame working mothers for this has no basis in reality. There’s no causal link. (If anything, poverty pushes people to eat less healthy but more accessible food.)

This is nothing more than Alexander finding a new way to shame working mothers while ignoring doctors who are in a much better position to decide if someone’s healthy or not (spoiler: weight isn’t everything). Never take dietary advice from someone who isn’t a nutrition specialist. Speaking of which, those doctors also wouldn’t be recommending intermittent fasting or turning to Jesus as part of a comprehensive weight-loss plan.

It’s not just bad advice from Alexander; it’s literally harmful.

But that’s what happens when someone strays from her lane.
