Christian Mommy Blogger: Godlessness and Paganism Destroyed “Intact Families”

Christian blogger and professional mommy-shamer Lori Alexander (a.k.a. “The Transformed Wife”) has always wanted to live in a utopian past that exists only in her mind, but her latest post about Hollywood not featuring “intact families” is ignorant even by her standards.

Here’s her opening question:

When was the last time you watched a TV show or movie that had a mother and father who loved each other, had more than one or two children, and the mother was home full time and the father worked hard to provide for his family?

Uhh… It’s been a while because that show sounds boring as hell.

What’s the conflict? What is every episode about? The laundry machine breaking? The reason we see more diverse representation in television and movies is because that’s a better reflection of reality. We don’t all live in a one-income-is-more-than-enough home where the mother’s dreams are limited by the size of her kitchen and the kids eventually serve as parents for their younger siblings. (Even when those families exist, it’s not like things end well. See: Duggar, Joshua.)

By the way, all those other families are “intact” too. They’re loving, they’re thoughtful, and they’re whole. Leave it to a conservative Christian to pass judgment on everyone else.

Alexander than jumps to the most illogical conclusion imaginable:

The family unit in America used to be valued. Mothers valued being home with their children. Fathers worked hard to provide. The average family had six to eight children before birth control. TV shows back then had intact families. Society knew the value of this. But as a society throws out God and becomes pagan, the intact family falls by the wayside and all other types of perversions of marriage and the family replace the intact family.

Families are valued… even if they don’t fit some conservative Christian cookie-cutter mold. Mothers (and fathers) do value time with kids… though that may be hard to come by if they don’t have help and resources (which Lori Alexander and other Republicans oppose). Fathers (and mothers) do work hard to provide… but it often takes more than one job to make ends meet because it’s increasingly difficult to find high-paying, forever-stable careers. Having more kids if you can afford them and care for them is fine, but notice how she denigrates people who choose to have fewer or none at all. She loves to dish out criticism; she can’t handle it the other way around. And, naturally, she thinks a creeping secularism is to blame for everything — and not bad public policies, more corporate greed, a push for more options in life for more people, etc.

It’s the height of Christian arrogance to think that your way of life is the only perfect one and everyone else falls short of it. Especially when so many people in those bubbles have spoken out about how much they suffered from it. We’re better off today because people can choose (to some extent, anyway) the kind of life they want to lead. No one is forced to stay in a loveless marriage where sex is an obligation.

If that’s what she desires, so be it. But to pretend everyone else is suffering or failing because their lives aren’t like hers? That’s just evidence of how thoughtless she is.
