CA Man Sues Psychic Who Promised (and Failed) to Destroy a Curse for $5,100

This may be the second story I’ve read this week where all the main characters come out looking bad.

Last month, a California man named Mauro Restrepo whose marriage was struggling went looking for a psychic on Google and came across the website of Sophia Adams, who runs the business “Psychic Love Specialist by Sophia.” Because her site described her as a “Ph.D Life Coach” — whatever the hell that’s supposed to mean — he figured she knew what she was doing and would be able to help him out. He felt “more confident that he was speaking with a professional.” Because he’s very, very gullible.

After exchanging some texts with her, he went to her business for a tarot card reading, where she claimed he suffered from bad luck. He believed it. Because he’s very, very gullible.

“This bad luck was, according to (Adams), placed on (Restrepo) by a witch hired by his ex-girlfriend“…

Adams told Restrepo that unless Adams removed the curse, Restrepo and his family would be “unhappy and in danger”…

I repeat: The psychic claimed Restrepo was suffering from bad luck — something everyone has to deal with — because his ex-girlfriend got someone to put a curse on him. (Uh-huh… Sure…) The right thing to do would be to walk out of that business because Adams is clearly making all this up. But again, he’s very, very gullible.

Restrepo wanted to know how to get rid of the curse. Adams, obviously sensing vulnerability, told Restrepo she could take care of everything herself… for $5,100. And this moron handed over his cash — or at least a $1,000 down payment — because he’s very, very gullible.

Turns out it didn’t help his marriage. Because of course it didn’t. And now Restrepo is suing everyone.

Mauro Restrepo’s Torrance Superior Court lawsuit names as defendants psychic Sophia Adams, and her business, Psychic Love Specialist by Sophia; the psychic’s husband, George R. Adams; her daughter, Tiffany Winston, also known as Tiffany Johnson and Tiffany Adams; and the clairvoyant’s [landlords], Christ and Polly Koutroumbis.

Other allegations in the suit filed Friday include negligence, civil conspiracy and both intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress. Restrepo seeks at least $25,000 in compensatory damages, plus punitive damages.

Restrepo has suffered sleepless nights, anxiety and anguish, the suit states.

I would have a hard time sleeping, too, if I was foolish enough to give a psychic $1,000 with the promise of $4,100 more all so she could pretend to cure me of a problem she single-handedly decided I have.

There’s no reason to think Adams defrauded Restrepo beyond the usual way psychics scam all their victims… still, it would kind of be glorious to see Restrepo win if for no other reason than maybe it’d scare off other psychics before they take more money from potential rubes.
