Christian Blogger Shames Working Moms: Your Kid May Have Sex If You’re Not Home

According to Christian blogger and professional mommy-shamer Lori Alexander (a.k.a. “The Transformed Wife”), there’s hardly any social ill that can’t be blamed on feminism. She’s especially furious at women who have careers outside their home.

In a recent post, she offered another reason women should give up their day jobs and stay at home: If they go off to work, it’ll be that much easier for their kids to invite people over for sex.

When I was in high school in the mid-1970s, most of my friends’ mothers were in the workforce. Homes were left empty during the day. One of my church friends (the only other girl in our church) would tell me about her fornication exploits. She and her boyfriend would go to her home during lunch and fornicate. She had a number of abortions. No one was home, since her mom worked outside of the home. It all seemed so unappealing to me, thankfully! This was not the life I ever wanted to live.

Typical kids: Sex for lunch. Abortion by dinner. Repeat daily. (Condoms were apparently non-existent to Alexander’s friends in the 1970s.)

Even beyond that point, we have to make clear yet again: The world she grew up in, where a husband’s income could sustain the family for life, does not exist anymore. In some cases, a single income barely covers a month’s rent anymore. This isn’t the fault of feminism; blame capitalism and greed. But the point is that it often takes two incomes (at least!) to make ends meet. The fact that low wages haven’t caught up with inflation isn’t the fault of working mothers.

Anyway, back to the sex:

Yes, teenagers can have sex in cars, but it’s far more comfortable and easier for them to have it in their own homes and in their own beds. When mothers aren’t home, it’s too easy for them to fornicate. When a mother is home full time, it’s impossible for them to do this IF the mother is a godly woman who would never allow her teenagers to do this. My teenagers sure knew this!

I don’t know how to break this to her, but kids who want to have sex will find a place to do it. If it’s not their bedroom when no one’s home, it’ll be a different room in the house when everyone’s home. If home isn’t an option, take your pick: a car, under the bleachers, an empty classroom, etc. Her criticism is as laughable as it is naïve. And it has absolutely nothing to do with whether a mother should work outside the home.

God commands that those who don’t work, don’t eat. He created us to work! It’s His ordained will for us. Laziness is destructive. It’s actually one of the reasons why Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed. Laziness leads to many other types of destructive sins. When teenagers have too much free time on their hands is when they can get in trouble, especially if mom is out of the home for hours every day.

Comprehensive sex education could prevent her worst fears, but that isn’t an option. It’s also obvious that Alexander doesn’t believe any of that Bible teaching will stick since the kids she knows are eager to ignore them the second they have some freedom. (What does that say about her?)

If Alexander is worried about kids rebelling, guess what? It happens. Kids will have different beliefs and different priorities. The best you can hope for is instilling a set of values that they’ll carry with them through life. Trying to blame working mothers for teen sex is just a desperate attempt to shame women who aren’t exactly like her.
