Christian Right Leader: Joe Biden’s Agenda is “Literally From the Pit of Hell”

Fresh off of citing a Bible verse calling for the death of gay people, Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council has more to say about President Joe Biden‘s agenda.

You can probably guess how this will go, but we’ll tell you anyway: He thinks it is “literally from the pit of hell.”

Which is a weird way to call about a COVID rescue package that will help significantly reduce the nation’s poverty levels, hasten our recovery from the pandemic, and put money in the pockets of hundreds of millions of Americans.

He made the comments on Wednesday during an event at Calvary Chapel Chino Hills in California.

“These are challenging times” Perkins said. “The policies that are coming out of this administration are literally from the pit of hell.”

“America is in a very, very, I would say, precarious situation,” he added. “We’ve seen idolatry in different forms, but now it is so blatant. We’re in the 11th hour and I believe America is in serious trouble. We are literally shaking our fists in the face of God and challenging God, ‘If you’re really God, you do something.’ And he is God, and he will do something. That’s why I believe it is incumbent upon the church — followers of Jesus Christ — to cry out for God’s mercy, and a move of his spirit like we’ve never seen before in this nation.”

Perkins didn’t specify which aspect of Biden’s agenda is “literally from hell” — which isn’t the correct use of “literally,” though that’s the least of the problems here — but we can safely assume it’s related to the Equality Act.

Interestingly, one of Donald Trump‘s lasting legacies from his single term is the way his agenda harmed immigrants and refugees and minority groups. There are just a handful of Bible verses that address homosexuality at all; there are scores more that address how to treat the refugee and the foreigner. Perkins would know that if he ever opened up the book he loves to cite.

And if idolatry is his concern, good luck finding any statement from him condemning the golden idol of Trump’s likeness that got attention during the recent CPAC conference. Apparently that actual idolatry didn’t bother him. It’s just civil rights he has a problem with.
