Conservatives in Arizona are so “pro-life,” they want abortion doctors to face the death penalty.
At least, that’s the logical consequence of House Bill 2650, proposed by Republican State Rep. Walter Blackman and co-sponsored by nine of his GOP colleagues. If the bill passes, doctors who perform abortions at any stage of pregnancy could be charged with homicide, a crime which is punishable by death. It would also prohibit public insurance providers in the state from covering abortion even in cases of rape or incest, and even if the mother’s life is in danger.
Blackman has a long history of lying about abortion. Pretending that a normal healthcare procedure is murder is right up his alley, as is allowing the government to murder citizens.
Arizona is a state where Republicans control the government — but not by much. Every Republican would have to support this bill for it to pass through the legislature — which isn’t likely — but the idea that a handful of lawmakers believe abortion is a crime deserving of death shows you these politicians don’t give a damn about women, don’t understand the circumstances that lead to abortion, and definitely aren’t “pro-life.”
They fantasize about making people suffer as much as possible because neither their God nor their political party ever taught them to be decent human beings. Rather than filing bills that would prevent women from having unwanted pregnancies in the first place, they’d rather focus on killing doctors, or driving those professionals out of the state. Because why the hell would decent doctors want to practice medicine in a state that’s out to get them?
The same people who don’t care about masks, and refuse to tackle COVID, are acting like they suddenly care about “sanctity of life” with a bill that may as well call for a firing squad.
Incidentally, other Arizona lawmakers are calling out their colleagues on this heartless, cruel piece of legislation:
Unbelievable. Instead of helping our communities survive this pandemic (1000 dying weekly), Republicans just dropped a bill that would ban abortion AND put people in jail for exercising their constitutional right to reproductive healthcare #azleg #HB2650https://t.co/lRFOYoqUv0

Hey doctors, @AZHouseGOP thinks you should get the DEATH PENALTY for providing constitutionally protected abortioncare.
How very “pro-life” of them https://t.co/Gr7xDFhhd5 pic.twitter.com/VQeiqlWw0U

As someone who has had an abortion, it’s absolutely sickening knowing my colleagues want to sentence my doctor and I to death for choices they have NO BUSINESS dictating for me or anyone else. #HB2650 #AZleg pic.twitter.com/li7jvITjmf

Reached for comment last night, State Rep. Athena Salman, a Democrat who vehemently opposes this bill and sounded the alarm on this bill in those tweets above, told me the Republican Party in her state “has embraced death to the dismay of us all. This is an atrocity.”
For the record, the other co-sponsors of this bill include:
Rep. Brenda Barton
Rep. Leo Biasiucci
Rep. Shawnna Bolick
Rep. Judy M. Burges
Rep. Frank P. Carroll
Rep. David L. Cook
Rep. John M. Fillmore
Rep. Jake Hoffman
Rep. Ben Toma
All of those Republicans want to see doctors executed. They are heartless people who want to use their power to force women to give birth against their will while punishing the very people trying to help them. None of them have any business in public office.
Incidentally, even without this bill, Arizona is one of the most restrictive states when it comes to abortion. If the goal is to draw a lawsuit in order to get this case to the Supreme Court, it may well be one of those bills that is so extreme, that even some of the conservative justices wouldn’t get on board with it. But it’s not a risk anyone should want to take.
