James Dobson Has Another Deranged Set of Predictions for a Democratic President

Focus on the Family’s founder and “chairman emeritus” James Dobson sent out his monthly newsletter yesterday and told his Christian audience that the sky was falling.

Suggesting Joe Biden is some kind of liberal extremist — as opposed to accurately describing him as a fairly traditional somewhat left-of-center politician — Dobson explained all the horrors that would befall the nation over the next few years:

The Left has now achieved ultimate power in the White House, in the House of Representatives, and in the Senate. Consequently, as I warned in December, there will be no checks and balances within our system of government. The most radical ideas promoted by President Joe Biden and his majority party will be enacted. We can infer from what they have told us that the years ahead will bring more regulation, less freedom, more taxation, less religious liberty, more socialism, less democracy, more funds for abortion, less support for the sanctity of human life, less funding for the military, more illegal immigration, more restrictions on speech, less patriotism, more wasteful spending, less support for families, more regulations on business, more appeasement of China, Iran, Russia, and North Korea, less support for the electoral college, trillions more dollars for climate nonsense, more LGBTQ propaganda, less moral compunction, more governmental corruption, less oversight of elections, more “cancel culture,” fewer police officers, more gun control, and less government of the people, by the people and for the people. We can also anticipate quick passage of the horrendous “Equality Act.” You might want to keep track of these items as they occur. This is just the beginning.

This is your brain on Christianity. It’s broken. It needs healing.

Just to destroy his premise, there are absolutely checks and balances in effect. The filibuster isn’t gone. The Democrats in the Senate can only do things with the approval of conservatives within their own party like Sen. Joe Manchin. And Biden is hardly the sort of people who wants to make huge liberal leaps if he doesn’t have to. Meanwhile the Supreme Court has a 6-3 super-conservative majority that won’t flip anytime soon.

So Dobson is lying right off the bat.

But even beyond that, he doesn’t explain why we would have “less freedom,” “less religious liberty,” “less democracy,” etc. He worries about Socialism without describing it, which means his gullible followers can pin anything they’d like on it. He laments the loss of the “sanctity of human life” while ignoring how the Trump administration’s incompetence at dealing with COVID has led to 387,000 dead Americans so far and the use of the death penalty in these final weeks. He claims we need more military funding without explaining why — or where that money would be going otherwise. He complains about losing the electoral college while never mentioning how a popular vote would be more democratic. He treats climate change like a conspiracy theory.

It’s downright laughable that he worries about “less moral compunction” when we just suffered through four years of corruption by Trump, his family, and a Party that blessed all of it.

Everything he’s worried about is exaggerated or delusional. And even where he’s accurate, those things are good for the country.

All that said, no one should be taking Dobson’s fears seriously at all give that he did the same thing in 2008, the last time Democrats had a unified government, and he was insanely wrong then too!

Focus on the Family, under his leadership, issued a statement warning against the election of Barack Obama. They wrote up a fictional “Letter from 2012 in Obama’s America” explaining what had happened over the past four years… as a way to frighten Christians before they voted in 2008. Our colleague Libby Anne has gone through that list before, explaining why most of Dobson’s predictions never even came close to panning out. ($7 a gallon gas! Campus ministries “ceased to exist”! Churches must be used for same-sex weddings!)

The worries that ended up coming true, like marriage equality, were good news for non-bigots everywhere.

The point is: Dobson’s entire career has been devoted to scaring Christians too dumb to realize that Dobson has no clue what he’s talking about. His parenting advice was awful. His purity advice was awful. His political advice was awful. And he hasn’t changed one bit.
