“Pro-Life Evangelicals for Biden” Launches, Refuting Major Trump Talking Point

There have been a whole bunch of faith-based (and non-faith!) groups announcing their support for Joe Biden, partly to counter the notion that only the Republican Party is home to people of faith and partly to show the inclusive nature of the Democrats.

But here’s a rather unique announcement: According to CNN, a bipartisan “Pro-life Evangelicals for Biden” group is set to launch today, killing two birds with one stone. The group includes the former pastor of Richard Nixon.

“We want to make it clear that there is a dimension to pro-life that goes beyond abortion,” [pastor John] Huffman told CNN.

“The evangelical movement we represent seems to have focused so much on the pro-life aspect of the President’s catering, in fact grooming, of the evangelical movement,” he said.

I can’t argue with that. As we’ve said on this site before, on the abortion issue alone, Democrats could easily make a “pro-life” case by saying they’re fighting for affordable health care, free and accessible contraception, childhood education, and a path out of poverty. Those are things that lower abortion rates.

You don’t need to ban abortion or overturn Roe v. Wade to do that. (In fact, such actions could backfire.)

As Huffman also notes, a “pro-life” group could also oppose the death penalty, support death with dignity, and call for a strong federal COVID response in order to prevent unnecessary suffering. Republicans reject all of those ideas.

If you care about humans and fetuses, Democratic policies are better for both groups. It’s not complicated.

Will Huffman’s group make a dent in the evangelical vote? Who knows. It may be too late. But remember that even a slight percentage drop among white evangelicals right now, especially in swing states, could help tip the election. We need to hear from more progressive Christians who support Biden, and this group strikes directly at the heart of the GOP’s strongest selling point to faith groups.

The more these Biden-friendly groups speak up, the better off we all are.
