Pastor John MacArthur of Grace Community Church in California is best known as the Christian so deranged that he wants his entire congregation to catch COVID. Last week, during an in-person service in defiance of government orders, he told his congregation how proud he was that “you’re not distancing, and you’re not wearing masks.”
He did an interview on Friday with Ryan Helfenbein, the Executive Director of Liberty University’s Falkirk Center (a “think tank” consisting entirely of people who don’t think), and MacArthur revealed exactly what it means to be a Christian.
The belief in the divinity of Jesus? Nope. The ability to forgive? Of course not.
It boils down to just three things: You hate gay people, you reject trans people, and you want to force women to give birth against their will. Any deviation from that makes you insufficiently Christian.
MacArthur explained what he told Donald Trump during a phone call recently:
… Christians could not vote Democratic because there’s no way that a Christian can affirm the slaughter of babies, homosexual activity, homosexual marriage, or any kind of gross immorality. No way we could, you know, stand behind a candidate who was affirming transgender behavior which, of course, is really the reprobate mind of Romans 1…
The flip side of that, which he didn’t say, was that Christians like him would have no problem voting for a thrice-married, affair-having, pussy-grabbing, swamp-attracting, family-separating, COVID-spreading huckster.
And then somehow the interview got worse.
… Joe Biden said the other day he’s going to make sure he fills his cabinet with Muslims. That is… as anti-Christian a statement as you could possibly make. That is a blasphemy of the true and living God.
MacArthur is referring to a speech Biden recently gave to a Muslim-American advocacy group. Biden didn’t say his Cabinet would only include Muslims, as MacArthur seemed to imply, but that Muslims would be a part of his administration. That’s not weird! Any president should want a diverse coalition of advisors and experts! As far as faith-based policies go, I would hope he includes an atheist in the mix, too.
But that’s not what MacArthur was saying. He’s angry because he fantasizes about a theocracy. Any deviation from conservative Christianity — even in a secular government — is a damning offense.
If a Muslim leader said the sort of thing MacArthur is saying, every preacher would be whining about impending Sharia Law. But because it’s a Christian who said it, it barely got any coverage.
If MacArthur wants Christians in power, though, killing off his congregation and community is really the dumbest way to achieve his goals.
