It’s Horrifying That Trump’s Secretary of State Thinks the Rapture is Real

There’s a video making the rounds in which Mike Pompeo, the current Secretary of State and all-around Donald Trump bootlicker, tells a church audience in Kansas that “We will continue to fight these battles, it is a never ending struggle… until the Rapture.”

He’s referring to the “battle” against marriage equality. And, of course, he’s implying that the Rapture is a real thing and not just one of the more bizarre tales in Christian mythology.

It’s obviously frightening for a man with that much power — and the ear of the president — to talk about how the righteous (meaning people like him) will be saved.

It should be noted that the video is from 2015, long before Pompeo entered Trump’s orbit. In the speech, he also talks about the “evil” of homosexuality and multiculturalism. But none of this is news to anyone who’s followed Trump’s Cabinet officials. We knew last year that Pompeo, then Trump’s CIA Director, was taking part in the White House’s Bible study group run by Ralph Drollinger.

Drollinger is a conservative Christian who has called Catholicism the “world’s largest false religion,” declared homosexuality an “abomination,” and said it’s “sinful” for women with children to serve in Congress. That’s the man spiritually guiding this White House.

Pompeo, a former Republican congressman, also used his time at the CIA to stop diversifying its workforce. In his first speech to CIA employees, he reportedly referenced his faith multiple times.

It’s well-documented that he’s the sort of Christian who should be as far away from foreign policy decisions as possible since he views the world in apocalyptic terms and sees Muslims — all Muslims — as a kind of existential threat to humanity.

But Trump keeps him around because he’s deferential and obedient. Pompeo also helps keep Trump’s evangelical base in line, shielding the president from backlash for his many scandals.

If his words surprise you… well, they shouldn’t. But if you’re looking for a way to channel your frustration, the easiest way to do it is by refusing to vote for Republicans. The GOP is the only party that would give a man with this warped ideology this much power. They shouldn’t be rewarded for it.
