David Barton is the quintessential Christian liar. He said all sorts of outlandish things in the name of Jesus, and he expects his listeners to believe every single word of it. He’ll lie about having earned a Ph.D. He’ll lie about voter turnout. He’ll lie about atheists. And that’s just in the past couple of months.
Barton’s lies are so obvious that his own publishers removed his history of Thomas Jefferson from the bookshelves because of all the inaccuracies in it.
That’s why there’s tremendous irony now that Barton is criticizing Bill O’Reilly and his bestselling history books for containing lies. It’s not that Barton is wrong here; it’s that he’s been guilty of far worse.
And my Patheos colleague Warren Throckmorton points out that at the 3:01 mark of this clip from Thursday’s episode of Barton’s Wallbuilders Live radio show, the pseudo-historian makes a remarkable comment:
If you have something that’s factually shown to be wrong, you need to go back and make a correction on it.
Wow. Accordingly, Throckmorton has a lengthy list of things Barton should apologize for. But don’t expect that to happen anytime soon. If Barton took his own advice, he’d never be able to talk about anything else.
