When members of the Islamic Community Center of Atlanta left a ladies’ class earlier this week, they found a note waiting for them in a sandwich bag. Expecting the worst, they opened it to find a handwritten note from an atheist woman with a $20 bill attached:
Hello,
I’m a white Atheist woman, but I strongly believe that everyone has the right to practice their religion in a safe place no matter what their religion is. I’m sorry for any negativity you may have experienced because of ignorant fear-mongering.
Where there’s hate there is a greater amount of love, and you are loved. I know $20 isn’t much, but I hope it helps with something.
Best Wishes [written in Arabic]
It’s a sweet gesture that I’m sure echoes what many atheists are feeling right now. We can disagree with Muslims on theology while recognizing how awful it must be for another religious minority right now. If they don’t have the freedom to believe what they want without fear of persecution, none of us non-Christians do. We all have to push back against Donald Trump‘s hate speech and the Republican voters who keep him going.
