Vice‘s Compelling New Interview with Raif Badawi’s Wife

If you’re unfamiliar with Raif Badawi. now would be a good time to catch up.

He’s the Saudi Arabian blogger who was punished in 2013 for starting a progressive website that called for, among other things, religious tolerance and women’s rights. his critics said that was insulting to Islam and eventually sentenced him to 10 years in jail and a 1,000,000 Saudi riyal fine (about $266,000).

Badawi received the first 50 lashes earlier this year… but the Saudis have found reason to postpone every subsequent set. Still, every Friday, we never know if it’s a day he will be lashed or granted mercy.

Vice just posted an incredible video about his story, including an interview with his wife, Ensaf Haidar, who is currently living in Quebec with their three kids.

Sean McGuire points out that the video “also goes into the foul hypocrisy of Canada and other nations in one breath condemning Saudi’s obvious blatant violations of human rights while in another happily taking billions of riyals for arms deals.”

Haider doesn’t answer a couple of questions regarding Saudi Arabia out of fear that it might jeopardize Badawi’s fate. That means she’s aware people over there may see this clip, making her willingness to do it at all that much more incredible.
