Why Won’t People Take Low-Paying Jobs? Lying Evangelist Blames Laziness

Evangelist Franklin Graham, best known outside of Christianity for spreading bigotry and hate to his millions of social media followers, spent his Labor Day trashing workers who refuse to work shitty jobs for low wages, as if demanding better treatment in the workplace is too much to ask:

… today it is troubling to witness the disregard we see for hard work. Almost every business is trying to hire people, but can’t find enough. So many people no longer want to work. What has happened in just two short years?

Yes, the coronavirus had a great impact, but political mismanagement has dealt a debilitating blow with things such as repeated stimulus payments and giveaway packages that encourage people not to go to work. The Republicans seem to know how to get people to work and the Democrats seem to know how to tax your money and give it to people as an incentive not to work…

There’s no point in pointing out how Republicans governors who ended unemployment benefits early didn’t see people rush back to work as conservatives predicted, or how those stimulus checks “substantially reduced hardship,” or how raising the minimum wage or offering better salaries actually leads to more people applying for job openings, because Graham and other conservative Christians don’t care about facts. They’re permanently stuck to their narrative that says everyone should be happy with whatever bad bosses give them.

The problem isn’t that people don’t want to work; it’s that they don’t want to give up their time, body, and life to a company that has no respect for what they do. It’s not asking much to be fairly compensated for what you bring to the table, no matter what job you hold. Graham doesn’t care because treating people decently in this life has never mattered to him; it’s why he uses his massive platform to condemn LGBTQ people at every turn, too.

If this sort of thoughtless, heartless mindset is where following Jesus takes you, then people should run the hell away from whatever religion Graham is trying to sell them.

Keep in mind Graham, while he’s encouraged people to get the vaccine, has opposed mask mandates. Which means he wants people to get back to work for lower salaries or lower hourly rates without even pushing for the kinds of protections that would keep them safe. He’s a moral monster who gets too much undeserved positive press because of his charity. The irony is that Graham, despite running a charity, is perpetuating a system that puts more people in need of charity. He just doesn’t care because electing Republicans is a bigger priority for him than helping all Americans.
