For the life of me, I will never understand how so many white evangelicals can still think Donald Trump is honest when evidence of his lies and corruption surround us.
Yet it’s still happening despite this administration’s botched response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Pew Research Center, an astonishing 77% of white evangelicals are at least somewhat confident that Trump is “doing a good job responding to the coronavirus outbreak.” The national average is 45%, roughly in line with his base.
Notice that, on the flip side, only 15% of atheists feel the same way. It’s still too high, but at least that’s in the right direction.
The fact that so many people, though, would have any confidence in this administration, in this time of crisis, is incredible. Republicans have lied about the nature of the pandemic as well as how prepared we are to face it, and they’re still not doing enough.
You may have seen these videos floating around online, revealing Trump downplaying the crisis:
Prior to Monday, Trump downplayed coronavirus no fewer than 24 times in less than two months, according to a Washington Post analysis.https://t.co/IeG2Dz05Q7pic.twitter.com/cTxalBON3m

And yet, when your religion is Trumpism, you’ll accept anything Dear Leader tells you. It’s biblical literalism applied to politics. You can’t be reasoned out of it because any criticism amounts to blasphemy.
Their irrationality is hurting all Americans.
