North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, a Republican who was elected separately from the state’s Democratic governor, has been leaning into his conservative Christian bigotry lately, presumably as a way to shore up his base for a future election. A couple of weeks ago, at a religious conference, he promoted Christian Nationalism, trashed trans people, and claimed forced religion in public schools could prevent mass shootings.
But none of this is new. Over the summer, Robinson spoke at Asbury Baptist Church and gave a similar speech, trashing public schools and insisting that children shouldn’t be taught about LGBTQ anything, as if any mention of those topics were inherently sexual and anti-Christian.
North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson says Christians must take control of public schools because children are being abused by being taught "filth": "There's no reason anybody anywhere in America should be telling any child about transgenderism, homosexuality, any of that filth." pic.twitter.com/aXjCPFKTs0

… We have got to wrestle this away from those folks. And I’m gonna tell you why: Because it is flat-out child abuse to take your children and tell them they have to attend school. Don’t have a choice. And then some of them will tell ’em they don’t want you to have a choice where they go to school. You have to send your children here to school. Then when they get there, what do they teach?
Teach ’em a bunch of stuff about how to hate America.
Teach ’em a bunch of stuff about why they are racist.
Teach ’em a bunch of stuff about transgenderism and homosexuality.
I’m saying this now, and I’ve been saying it, and I don’t care who likes it: Those issues have no place in the school! There’s no reason anybody, anywhere in America, should be telling any child about transgenderism, homosexuality, any of that filth.
And yes I called it filth! If you don’t like it that I called it filth, come see me and I will explain it to you. It’s time for us to stop letting these children be abused at these schools, and it’s not gonna happen until the people of God stand up and demand different.
What does he think public schools teach about LGBTQ issues? The best positions in the bedroom?! At most, they acknowledge the existence of LGBTQ people in a health class or discuss prominent LGBTQ voices in history and literature, especially if that has something to do with why that person is relevant. Conservative bigots like Robinson have no clue what’s actually being taught in school; they just make it up and convince gullible conservative audiences that their worst fears are coming true.
And of course, no one’s forcing their kids to attend public schools. What Robinson and his ilk fear most is that their children will be in classes with students who aren’t just like them… and it’ll lead to more understanding, tolerance, and empathy. Those values go against their Christian faith.
Robinson is a heartbeat away from being governor. This isn’t just run-of-the-mill evangelical hatred. This is a Christian bigot getting elevated to powerful positions in government. The same guy who trashes public schools — and therefore the government itself — wants to be in charge of it all so he can turn everything into a church. He’s saying it out loud. The question is whether reporters and voters are taking it as seriously as they need to.
