If you want to see the Hollywood version of the downfall of Jim Bakker (played by Andrew Garfield) and his ex-wife Tammy Faye Bakker (Jessica Chastain), the first trailer for The Eyes of Tammy Faye is now out:
As Vulture explains:
The film looks like it will follow the rise and fall of their empire, and features crucial moments in Tammy Faye lore, like her famous interview with AIDS activist Steve Pieters in 1985. The hair and makeup in this movie serve the same role as the plant in Little Shop of Horrors: It’s an impressive special effect that keeps growing and growing until it becomes a character of its own.
Here’s hoping it’s not entirely sympathetic to Tammy Faye. She was part of the scam if not the leader, and Jim Bakker couldn’t have defrauded so many people without her.
I’m all for any popular vehicle for exposing Bakker’s grift, whether it’s a podcast or a feature film. The more people understand what he did, they more they can see how it’s still going on. And wait till some viewers realize Bakker himself is still grifting in the name of Jesus.
If the Giant Buckets of Food don’t make an appearance, this movie will be dead to me.
The film is set to be released on September 17.
