Falwell Won’t Host a “Real” Graduation Party for Liberty U. Students After All

Late last week, despite Liberty University’s $10 million lawsuit against him, Jerry Falwell, Jr. told a group of students at an off-campus party that he was inviting them to his place for a “real” graduation ceremony.

Which really isn’t a thing you want to hear from a guy taken down over his hypocritical sexual actions and whose wife reportedly seduced a student on campus.

In the videos, Falwell, who resigned in 2020 as president and chancellor of the evangelical school, can be seen standing on an outdoor stage beneath handmade signs that include a cross, as a crowd attending what several people have identified as a comedy show look on. Holding a microphone, Falwell invites seniors to an event at “our farm” on May 8, saying, “We’re going to have the real Liberty graduation.”

“If you’re not a senior but you’re dating one, you can come, too,” he added, according to the video obtained by RNS.

When contacted by Religion News Service, Falwell said he was only joking about this being the “real” graduation but didn’t deny the planned event.

Asked about those who have questioned whether it is appropriate for the former president of the university to host such a party, Falwell said, “I live right here, and I’ve got a big farm, and I got a bunch of students that I love and that love me, and I’m going to do it.

“I don’t care whether anybody likes it or not,” he said, laughing.

It’s never good when the former head of a fundamentalist Christian university ever says “I don’t care whether anybody likes it or not,” when his entire worldview is supposedly based on following someone else’s rule book.

But the party won’t be happening anymore after Falwell’s health took a turn for the worse.

… Unfortunately, this weekend I encountered another bout of symptoms resulting from the respiratory emboli that were first diagnosed last year. For the fourth time this year I was admitted to the hospital for a series of tests to address my labored breathing and other effects of the emboli. As a result, we regrettably must cancel the picnic this weekend

I don’t know whether or not to believe him. It’s possible that he just needed an easy out after that video leaked, and his problematic health — which he’s known about for a while — gave him the excuse he needed to save face. Whatever the case, students are better off avoiding Falwell and his wife at all costs. Nothing good was going to come from that party. As we’ve seen repeatedly over the past few years, nothing good ever comes from a gathering involving the Falwells.
