On April 22, 1971 — exactly 50 years ago today — Madalyn Murray O’Hair (who founded American Atheists) appeared on a show called Firing Line hosted by the conservative writer William F. Buckley Jr.
I had never seen this conversation before. I can’t even remember seeing O’Hair on camera this early in her activism career. It’s fascinating to watch.
If you have an hour to spare, consider checking it out. It’s striking how so many of the issues they discuss still haven’t been resolved. Buckley’s questions are still asked by many conservatives today and the political situation is unfortunately still very pro-religion. But there are far more Americans today who don’t belong to an organized faith, and atheism itself isn’t as controversial as it used to be.
If anything they discussed stands out to you, please leave the timestamp/summary in the comments.
