During his regular Bible study livestream yesterday, right-wing radio host and former candidate for Lt. Governor of Virginia E.W. Jackson assured viewers that God was giving him strength to overcome COVID (which he caught last November) without serious side effects.
That’s fine. Glad he’s healthy.
But it’s jarring to hear a Christian talk about how God’s helping him cope with a virus when the same guy said, a year ago, that Christians “don’t have to” get the virus, suggesting it was a lack of faith that made you susceptible to it.
Here are the two clips side-by-side:

… Every now and then, you might get hit, too. But you don’t stay hit. Yeah, I had COVID, but I’ll tell you what, I didn’t stay sick. You’re looking at me right now; I’m doing just fine. I hear about all these lingering problems and symptoms. I didn’t have any. Didn’t have to go to the hospital. Didn’t have to have a ventilator. And I’m 69 years old… It’s because I believe in the healing power of God.
[From March 29, 2020:]
I don’t have the coronavirus! I’m not gonna get the coronavirus! I’m not gonna give anybody the coronavirus! Cause I can’t get it, because I talked to God about it, and I’ve taken my vaccine — my vaccine is Psalm 91 — and I am FREE from that mess!
And I declare you can be free from it too.
God gets credit for preventing a disease. But when you get the disease, God gets credit for not making you even more sick. But if you do get more sick, then God gets credit for having some nebulous larger plan.
It’s a foolproof scam designed to capture the lowest hanging fruit. And Jackson, as usual, doesn’t realize he’s been duped.
