Pastor: The Constitution Says Democrats Can’t Question Amy Coney Barrett’s Faith

It’s always weird when you show up on FOX News without even realizing it. But this site was quoted during a segment about apparent-future-Supreme-Court-Justice Amy Coney Barrett and whether her faith is fair game for Democrats during her confirmation hearings.

Weirdly enough, MAGA cultist Pastor Robert Jeffress agreed with my basic point… before throwing in a complete non sequitur to spread the myth that Democrats are anti-religion.

… [If any senator asks the nominee about her beliefs,] that nominee needs to look the senator in the eye and say, “Senator, Article VI of the Constitution that you say you uphold prohibits you from using any religious litmus test to judge my suitability for office. You can ask me about the Constitution, my judicial philosophy, the law, or the weather, and I’ll answer those questions, but any question about the specifics of my faith is completely out of bounds.

Barrett’s judicial philosophy is literally the only thing anyone would ask about. No one cares about her private religious beliefs. Jeffress, with his short-term memory, doesn’t seem to recall that Sonia Sotomayor is also Catholic and that wasn’t an issue for Democrats… and neither is the Catholic faith of the Democrat WHO’S CURRENTLY RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT.

Democrats are not anti-Catholic.

Meanwhile, Robert Jeffress believes Jews will burn in Hell. That has nothing to do with this. But there’s never a wrong time to bring that up.

There’s no religious litmus test when it comes to Barrett, either. Jeffress is raising a fake concern that has nothing to do with the matter at hand.

Barrett’s not being criticized because she’s Catholic. She’s being criticized because her past legal writings suggest that Catholic judges should, at times, follow their faith instead of the law. Senators should absolutely be asking where she believes the line is and when it should get crossed.

I should add: I’m acting like this is a normal confirmation hearing. It’s not. It’s a hypocritical power grab by Republicans — before Ruth Bader Ginsburg has even been buried — meant as a last ditch attempt to appease their base and make sure there’s a conservative majority on the Supreme Court that could hand Donald Trump a victory if he can throw enough wrenches into the functioning of our democracy.

Barrett and most Republican senators are playing right along with that plan. There are far bigger issues right now that her judicial philosophy.
