During the Republican National Convention last week, former Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz delivered a taped speech in which he claimed, falsely, that Joe Biden wasn’t really Catholic. Because he supports pro-choice policies (regardless of his personal views), Holtz claimed Biden and other politicians like him were “Catholics in name only.”
One of the important reasons he has my trust is because nobody is but a stronger advocate for the unborn than President Trump. The Biden-Harris ticket is the most radically pro-abortion campaign in history. They and other politicians are Catholics in name only and abandon innocent lives. President Trump protects those lives. I trust President Trump.
Trump’s ignorance regarding the pandemic has killed more than 186,000 people. Trump doesn’t care about Russian leaders offering bounties to kill U.S. troops. Trump thinks soldiers who die or get captured in war are “suckers” and “losers.”
Lou Holtz is a moron.
Unstated in his speech, of course, was the implication that Donald Trump is in any way a devout person. Christianity isn’t a way of life for Trump; to him, it’s nothing more than a tool for exploiting people, and he’s used it to his advantage. Plus, if Biden isn’t a Catholic because he supports abortion rights, then about half of U.S. Catholics aren’t really Catholic either.
Holtz’s statement was so despicable — especially coming during the RNC, suggesting the GOP supports his rhetoric — that the president of Notre Dame, Rev. John I. Jenkins, denounced it the following day:
… we Catholics should remind ourselves that while we may judge the objective moral quality of another’s actions, we must never question the sincerity of another’s faith…
Naturally, since Holtz pissed everyone off, Trump wants to reward him. Anything that riles up liberals — especially religious liberals — makes him happy. So Trump said yesterday he would be awarding Holtz the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
The president said he had received letters from football coaches across the country, as well as other people, recommending Holtz, 83, for the honor. Trump said he has known Holtz for a “long time” and called him a friend.
“We’ve analyzed it very closely. We’ve looked at all those recommendations. We’ve looked at Lou’s life and his career and what he’s done for charity, and the football is obvious,” Trump said. “He was a great coach, but what he’s done beyond even coaching, so Lou will be getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”
Uh-huh. I’m sure denigrating Biden’s faith had nothing to do with it.
Holtz will soon join the ranks of esteemed Americans like Tom Hanks, Toni Morrison, and… Rush Limbaugh. (The racist misogynist was given the award earlier this year.)
It’s a purely symbolic gesture, but the message from Trump here is that anyone who denigrates the faith of a Democrat deserves a reward. The hypocrisy is irrelevant.
No date has been set for the award ceremony.
