This Child Is Singing a Christian Version of System of a Down’s “Chop Suey”

You’ve undoubtedly heard the song “Chop Suey” by System of a Down.

Get ready to hear the Christian version of it.

It’s the work of the O’Keefe Music Foundation, a non-profit that helps young musicians film their performances in a professional setting — which is so cool! It’s even more amusing that some of those kids are singing metal and rock songs.

So when an 8-year-old girl wanted to sing Chop Suey, they were there for it. But the lyrics — with lines referring to “self-righteous suicide” and “when angels deserve to die” — were not exactly kid-appropriate. So they rewrote them to one that can be sung in church with lines like “helpless and crucified” and “stealing all the cookies on the table.”

I praise the lord with every breath I take up
Forgive the sins I know I gotta make up
Like stealing all the cookies on the table
I try my best to do as I am able
You wanted to
I praise the lord with every breath I take up
You wanted to
Forgive the sins I know I gotta make up
You wanted to
Like stealing all the cookies on the table

That day on the mountain side
helpless and crucified.
Arms, wide, you took up your cross and died

The girl singing is fine (and talented). I understand why the lyrics had to be altered. But why to this? Even KIDZ BOP knows to avoid religion. Also, if suicide is problematic… why is Christian torture okay?!

As one YouTube commenter pointed out, quoting King of the Hill, “You’re not making Christianity better. You’re just making rock n’ roll worse.”
