Trump: Under a Liberal Supreme Court, Religion Will Be “Almost Wiped Out”

During an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network’s David Brody tonight, Donald Trump went back to the only campaign strategy that ever works for him: Scaring white evangelical Christians into backing away from their alleged morality to vote for him because the alternative is UTTER CHAOS.

In the clip below, he says that if he’s not in office nominating extreme right-wing judges to the Supreme Court, religion will be “almost wiped out.”

David Brody: What do you think of what happened with Neil Gorsuch in the 6-3 decision with the LGBT civil rights? That was a shock to a lot of folks.

President Trump: I was surprised. I was surprised. Some people felt that it was a decision that they weren’t as surprised as I was, yeah I was surprised.

David Brody: And John Roberts? Is he the new Anthony Kennedy? Or potentially worse?

President Trump: Well, so far we’re not doing so well. It says, look, you’ve had a lot of losses with a Court that was supposed to be in our favor. This is just to show what means… we need, you know, you’ll probably have a couple of more judges in the next four years, it could even be more than that could be three or four. If you have a radical left group of judges, religions I think will be almost wiped out at America. If you look at it, pro-life will be absolutely wiped out. So if you have that happening, pro-life is going to be out. It’s going to be gone.

None of that stands up to even the simplest bit of scrutiny.

Somehow, religion managed to survive two terms of President Obama. It’s not going to go away under a Catholic president like Joe Biden, either, no matter who he nominates to the Court. (Call it a hunch.)

What would that even mean?!

The topic that even began that response was the recent SCOTUS decision saying anti-discrimination laws that protect people on the basis of “sex” also apply to gay and trans people. But that decision from Neil Gorsuch didn’t even get into religious business owners, who may very well be able to discriminate all they want!

Which is to say: The worst case scenario here is that religious people who own bakeries or run taxpayer-funded charities can’t be openly bigoted. That’s what Trump is referring to when he says religion will be “wiped out.” And that’s the sort of irrational sky-is-falling bullshit that a lot of white evangelicals will buy into because they’re too ignorant to realize it.

The irony is that Trump remaining in power thanks to the votes of white evangelicals is doing more damage to their religion than a Biden presidency ever could.

As for the eradication of “pro-life,” whatever that means, just remember that abortion rates go down under Democratic presidents.

Republicans love the abortion issue because it always gives them something to complain about.

It’s amazing how, even when doing an interview with the least challenging reporters in the country, Trump still has to exaggerate and lie. It’s the only language he knows. And the majority of white evangelicals understand it perfectly.

Some of them may finally be realizing the damage they’ve done, but odds are most of them will remain loyal to the one candidate who genuinely doesn’t give a damn about any of them.
