Robert Jeffress: Evangelicals Who Don’t Support Trump “Are Very Weak” Christians

As I noted last week, Donald Trump may be losing a bit of support from white evangelical Christians. Given how much support he had from them in 2016, he can really only go down in approval, and his recent actions (take your pick) aren’t doing him any favors.

But MAGA cultist and FOX News contributor Pastor Robert Jeffress isn’t quite ready to concede that Trump’s actions are to blame for the decline in evangelical support.

Instead, he’s blaming those Christians for being bad at Christianing.

Jeffress argues that even though none of the chaos is the president’s fault, he’s still taking heat from voters, particularly Christian voters. “The fact is most people — and I have to say it, most Christians — are weak when you get down to it. They are very weak,” he laments.

“They blow with public opinion, and they don’t want to be thought of bad by other people. And so they just go back and forth … and I think all of that is contributing to this drop in the polls that we’re seeing.”

The good news, according to Jeffress, is that there’s a long time before November, and there’s a good chance most of the chaos will be gone by then.

Since when has bad publicity ever stopped white evangelicals from holding bad opinions? They oppose marriage equality, love guns, reject science and comprehensive sex education, don’t give a damn about the climate, and have a long track record of supporting the worst political candidates in every election.

They don’t care if you hate them. Like Jeffress, they just pretend they’re being “persecuted” and carry on with their irrational thinking.

The idea that they might suddenly drift from Trump now because they’re concerned with public opinion is laughable and utterly wrong. (Which makes sense, since that describes Jeffress perfectly.)

All that’s happening is some of those evangelicals may finally be realizing Trump is a human disaster, devoid of all morality, eager to make a bad situation worse, and he even sucks at pandering to Christians.

Jeffress can’t bring himself to challenge his Real Savior, so instead, he blames Christians for being insufficiently deferential to whatever Trump’s administration is doing. It’s pathetic. Evangelicals should be running from Trump as quickly as possible. If they do, there’s the added bonus of getting away from Jeffress, too.
