GOP Lawmaker Rejects Face Masks Since They Hide How God Created Us in His Image

People all over the country have been stomping their feet and offering all kinds of excuses for why they should not have to wear face masks in public. While they may be temporarily uncomfortable, wearing them can save lives.

It’s one thing for random people to complain, but for a government official to reject them sets an awful precedent. It’s why Mike Pence received criticism last week after photos showed him without one at a hospital. At least he’s since apologized.

That’s not the case with Ohio State Rep. Nino Vitale, who says he doesn’t want to wear a mask because God doesn’t wear one either.

Here he is quoting himself on Facebook:

… What is my response? “This is not the entire world. This is the greatest nation on earth founded on Judeo-Christian Principles. One of those principles is that we are all created in the image and likeness of God. That image is seen the most by our face. I will not wear a mask.” – Rep. Vitale

So… God made us in His image. And everyone knows that because of our faces. If we wear masks, no one will get to see our noses or mouths, which would make God practically non-existent. Therefore, everyone can die.

Something like that?

Even for those who believe in Imago Dei (that humans were made in the image of God), this is a horrendously bad take. That belief is a way of saying that everyone’s life has equal value. We should care about the poor, for example, because God deems them worthy of love and care, too. Wearing a mask wouldn’t change that, even by Vitale’s standards.

Surely, God would want people to love their neighbors, right? Right now, that means wearing the damn masks.

This isn’t Vitale’s first time spouting off dangerously inaccurate information about Covid-19. He started the hashtag #MasksDoNotWork — making the same argument that says if Lysol “kills 99.9% of fungi, viruses and bacteria on household surfaces,” then it’s entirely useless — and cited an opinion piece as medical fact.

He’s a Republican, by the way.

In case there was any doubt.

Just wanted to make that clear.

He’s running unopposed for re-election this November.
