Another Right-Wing Lie: Joe Biden Plans to “Declare War” on Religious Freedom

When President Obama was in office, we were told by conservatives he would take away our religious freedoms. He did not. Obviously.

It’s arguable that Donald Trump has done more than any president to harm Christianity by linking the religion — at least its white evangelical wing — to his disastrous policies.

But if Joe Biden wins in November, a non-hyperbolic Michael Brown is already warning about the inevitable (fictional) assaults on religious freedom. As if one of the more moderate, religious Democrats out there would somehow use the government to persecute his own faith.

Brown writes in an article for Charisma about the damage Biden will do with his plan to “advance LGBTQ+ Equality”… because the ability to be a bigot is really what religious freedom means to people like Brown.

… if put into law, it would mean the most aggressive, government-sanctioned attack on Christian values in our nation’s history. Do not be deceived.

Somehow, marriage equality became legal nationwide and Christianity is still around. Who could’ve guessed. If protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination is an assault on your religion, then your religion is the problem.

The entire article, needless to say, is a deception. Equality always seems like a threat to those with privilege.

Let’s also remember that on Jan. 25 of this year, Biden tweeted, “Let’s be clear: Transgender equality is the civil rights issue of our time. There is no room for compromise when it comes to basic human rights.”

Unfortunately, what this translates out to is a war on the rights of those who do not embrace radical transgender activism. And that means a war on those who hold to biblical ethics. A war on those who recognize only male and female sexes. A war on you and me.

He needs to define “war” since it’s clear he doesn’t know what the word means.

LGBTQ people are not going to bomb anyone’s neighborhoods. They’re not protesting church services. They’re not demanding special treatment.

Part of Brown’s schtick is embracing the “bigot” label put upon him by critics for his aggressive anti-gay activism. But consider putting the shoe on the other foot: If your neighbor told you, in no uncertain terms, that your identity is a disorder, and your marriage a sham, then pushing back — and pushing back hard — is inevitable. When right-wing Christians are demanding the ability to refuse services to people based on their sexual orientation, then those Christians deserve to be reprimanded, not accommodated.

Most importantly, no one is telling Brown he can’t remain a bigot.

Still, he pretends otherwise:

Biden would make it illegal for someone to get professional counseling to deal with unwanted same-sex attractions or gender-identity confusion. And he would force schools to allow biological males to share bathrooms and locker rooms with biological females if the boys identify as girls.

There’s a difference between counseling to deal with unwanted attractions, and counseling that falsely implies sexual orientation can be reversed with electroshock or Jesus. The latter, which has no basis in science, should not be sanctioned by the state. And the bigotry and ignorance Brown shows towards trans people suggests people are faking their gender identity just for personal benefit. That’s simply not the case. Trans people are far more likely to be victims of violence than perpetrators. And predators who prey on women and children in restrooms are just that: predators. Sexual harassment and assault are still illegal.

Brown goes on to whine about how Christian adoption and foster care agencies that receive taxpayer money wouldn’t be allowed to discriminate against same-sex parents… which is a good thing. Any agency that hates gay people more than it wants children to be placed in loving homes shouldn’t be in the business — or at least they shouldn’t be getting federal grants for it. If those agencies really cared about children, they would understand that.

Brown warns that this is what will happen if you vote for Biden this year.

Sounds like a ringing endorsement.
