Kanye West and his choir, continuing his dive into conservative Christianity and pro-Trump propaganda, are apparently joining a group of self-proclaimed “prophets” who hope to spark the next Great Awakening. It’s all part of a rally called Awaken 2020.
“It’s time for you to be part of the Jesus awakening that is shifting HISTORY,” a website promoting the event reads. “Open the door and enter into a new era, a new decade, of revival that is bringing a movement of signs and wonders, healing of the sick, and preaching of the gospel.”
Awaken 2020 is one of many large-scale tent-and-stadium prayer events being organized by religious-right leaders this year in hopes of sparking evangelical activism and a spiritual revival that will lead to reformation of the church and transformation of society.
If the goal is to simply get publicity, this is an odd way to do it, given the company.
After all, the other speakers are people who believe God hand-picked Donald Trump to help usher in the End Times. It’s also ironic that the rally wants to start a movement that includes healing the sick when the Republican Party is doing everything it can to limit access to affordable health care and sabotage the system we currently have.
The event sponsors aren’t any better. They fully embody the toxicity that the Trump administration represents. Che Ahn believes Christians need to infiltrate the government in order to stop the so-called LGBTQ agenda. “Prophetess” Cindy Jacobs thinks God wants Christians to be rich to make Jews jealous. Infamous prosperity gospel preacher Paula White doesn’t even need an introduction; she’s just a female televangelist version of the grifting Trump.
It’s bad enough that we have a president willing to give these people publicity they don’t deserve; now Kanye West is drawing more attention to their delusions.
Makes you wish he would just stick to appearing on the pages of tabloids instead of clinging to the most ostentatious Christians he can find.
