For the second year, if you visit the County-City Building in South Bend, Indiana, you’re going to see this pleasant holiday display… that may upset people after they figure out what it actually says:
The “Tolerance Tree,” which reads “Oh come all ye faithless” and “Even Heathens Celebrate the Season!,” is sponsored by the Northern Indiana Atheists. They took advantage of a policy, generally used to promote Nativity scenes, that allows outside groups to sponsor displays in the government building during the holidays.
The group said their goal was to make sure residents saw more representation than just Christianity:
“We just want people to get along and understand each other,” said Kelly Pickell. “The first step is being able to tolerate each other. Ideally, the ultimate goal is to have acceptance for one another so we can be a true community. Tolerance is the first step in that.“
That’s the sort of holiday spirit anyone should be able to get behind.
