Conservative Christian Leaders Gather in White House to Pray For Embattled Trump

As impeachment looms closer, 25 members of Donald Trump‘s informal evangelical advisory board met with the president and prayed with him in the White House’s Roosevelt Room as part of an hour-long meeting where he was also greeted with a standing ovation.

They weren’t praying for the truth to come out, of course. They were just praying for Trump to come out unscathed. That’s where their Christian loyalties lie.

“We discussed our support,” said [Jack] Graham, the pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas. “We assured him that evangelicals across America support him. …We are unwavering in our support for the president.”

Well, white Republican evangelicals support him. Everyone else, not so much.

But that statement is so typical of white evangelicals these days: They’d support Trump even if he really did shoot someone on Fifth Avenue. They’re unbothered by ethnic cleansing or Trump’s alleged rape. About 80% of white evangelicals voted for Trump in 2016, and that number has only dropped to about 77% today. In other words, virtually nothing Trump has done has troubled them. They’re happy to let refugees suffer if it means giving a lifetime appointment to another unqualified right-wing judge.

Besides the prayers, the group focused on Trump’s supposed accomplishments: Judges, religious freedom, judges, the suicide of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and judges.

Trump did not appear preoccupied with the impeachment inquiry, the advisers said, adding that the majority of their time was focused on various accomplishments: the nomination of federal judges, criminal justice reform, the defense of religious freedom, abortion reduction, the child tax credit, opportunity zones, the battle against opioid addiction and human trafficking, the Islamic State and the targeted operation leading to the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Everything is rosy when FOX News and the Bible are you only sources of information…

But those prayers may not pan out as they hope. Every day, more and more evidence of Trump’s criminal actions come to light. More first-hand sources testify about his wrongdoing. If Trump comes crashing down, we can at least hope he takes some of these religious leaders’ reputations down with him.
