In response to POLITICO‘s lengthy article about Jerry Falwell, Jr. and the way he’s wielded power and fear over people at Liberty University, Falwell now says he’s getting the FBI to look into the breach of security at his school.
Because employees who tell the world about their shitty boss by speaking with a journalist are a national security problem that must be stopped.
Here’s The Hill:
Falwell said in an exclusive interview that in the coming days the FBI will review university documents at the Lynchburg, Va., campus. He accused former colleagues of stealing school property in the form of emails and then sharing them with reporters in an effort to damage his reputation.
The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
“Our attorneys have determined that this small group of former board members and employees, they’re involved in a criminal conspiracy, are working together to steal Liberty property in the form of emails and provided them to reporters,” Falwell Jr. said.
For most people, watching your former friends share private messages with the public is just a typical Facebook fight. For Falwell, it amounts to a criminal conspiracy to take him down like he’s some Christian Mafia Boss.
Oh well. Thoughts and prayers all around. Maybe one day he’ll realize that if he was just better at his job, students and staffers wouldn’t have to talk to reporters about how awful the culture is at Liberty. (There’s a reason no one’s leaking emails talking about how amazing Falwell is.)
I’m sure he can just call a pool boy to clean up his crocodile tears.
Incidentally, there was a passage in Brandon Ambrosino‘s article about Falwell going to a Miami nightclub. That in itself isn’t all that scandalous, but Liberty prohibits co-ed dancing and alcohol, so it would be the height of hypocrisy to see Falwell livin’ it up like that. Ambrosino told Falwell he had a picture of him and his son Trey at the club. Falwell didn’t take that information well:
In a statement on August 21, Jerry Falwell denied the existence of any photo of him at the club. “There was no picture snapped of me at WALL nightclub or any other nightclub,” Falwell wrote. “I’m sure you already knew that though.”
When told that I had obtained a photo of him for this article, Falwell said I was “terribly mistaken.” “If you show me the picture, I can probably help you out,” he wrote. “I think you are making some incorrect assumptions, or have been told false things or are seeing something that was photo–shopped.”
After I sent him the photo, as well as a photo of Trey at Wall, Falwell responded: “I never asked anyone to get rid of any pictures on the internet of me and I never have seen the picture you claim is of me below. If the person in the picture is me, it was likely photo-shopped.” In a second email sent 23 minutes later, Falwell wrote: “But the bigger question, Brandon, is why would I want a picture like that taken down if I had seen it?”
Well. About that. The website where the picture was published is called World Red Eye, and the site’s owner had no idea why POLITICO licensed the image in question until he saw the article. But after founder Seth Browarnik read it, he posted this revelation:
We wholly reject Jerry Falwell Jr.’s baseless allegation… that one of our pictures was “photo-shopped” or manipulated in any fashion.
As a result, we reviewed all the images we have from the event and discovered an additional four photos that include Mr. Falwell and two more of his son.
Falwell lied. He wasn’t Photoshopped into the picture. He knew he was there and he still lied about it on the record. That’s what he does. That’s what conservative Christians do. It’s the same thing Donald Trump does — keep lying because your followers are too ignorant to question your authority. Lying is always acceptable to people like Falwell as long as they can convince themselves they’re promoting Jesus in the long run.
If Falwell lied about the pictures, what else is he hiding?
It would be glorious if there really is an FBI investigation, and investigators discover that the only criminal is the guy making shady land deals with school money to line his own pockets.
