Dave Hayes, a Christian activist known as the “Praying Medic,” last seen explaining how he prayed for God to put gold dust on his hands and it worked, has some advice for people wondering if God is speaking to them: He is! You just have to be able to tell the difference between your thoughts and all the supernatural ones trying to get through to you.
Totally simple. Nothing weird about that at all.
… Most of the time, when you hear God’s voice, it is not a loud audible voice. God’s speaking to us sounds like our thoughts. The way that you know that you’re hearing God’s voice is the content, the thoughts, that you hear are not your own thoughts!
Now, when I heard this other voice talking to me, I was, like, “Well, that’s not me! Those aren’t my thoughts! That’s not the way I think! And that’s not the kind of things that I would say!” This voice was internal, but it was not me, okay?
So a lot of people hear demonic voices. A lot of people who end up, you know, shooting dozens of people — they’re hearing demonic voices. They’re hearing voices in their head. They’re hanging other voices, right?
So there are a lot of voices out there in the spiritual world that can talk to you. You can hear angelic voices. You can hear demonic voices. And you can hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. And then there’s your own thoughts. The key to learning to hear God’s voice is learning to distinguish the difference between demonic voices, angelic voices, and the voice of the Holy Spirit — and your own thoughts.
Here’s a thought: If you’re hearing voices in your head that are not your own thoughts — especially if they’re telling you to harm other people — please get professional help. It’s not God. It’s not Satan. It’s not an angel. It’s either you, someone playing a trick on you, or something else far more serious.
For anyone, especially someone with an audience of gullible people, to pretend God needs a direct line to people is just plain dangerous. Especially considering how many people act on what they believe are supernatural voices. Plus, if I were Satan, I would just imitate God with my not-so-audible voice and trick everybody… what are you going to do then?!
