Conservatives Are Mad at the Wrong MN City for Dropping the Pledge at Meetings

The city of St. Louis Park, Minnesota has been at the center of a national firestorm after local officials decided to drop the Pledge of Allegiance from the formal part of its meetings, citing a more diverse population as the reason to go without the ritual.

After all, plenty of people don’t believe we live in one nation “under God.” Others understand we don’t really have “liberty and justice for all” and they refuse to lie about it. Some just don’t want to pledge allegiance to the U.S. flag when our country is responsible for so many atrocities domestically and abroad. Those are good reasons to protest the Pledge, and all the more reason to stop pretending it’s a message of unity.

The ignorant Republicans who act like this is some treasonous move never have anything intelligent to say about this. Donald Trump called it “stupidity” and “disloyalty,” offering no further explanation. A different FOX News contributor said those bothered by the Pledge would be “better off living in another country.”

But there’s now a new response even dumber than those.

A bunch of angry conservatives — the sort of people who show up in comment threads yelling in ALL CAPS and misspelling everything under the sun — are apparently sending very nasty emails to… the nearby city of Spring Lake Park. (An “S”? An “L”? A “Park”? THAT’S ALL I NEED TO KNOW!)

You can see it around the 21:04 mark of the Spring Lake Park City Council meeting from July 1. City Administrator Daniel Buchholtz explains to the officials that they’re not doing anything controversial.

… I want to assure residents, we’ve been getting some emails from folks from all over the country about the Pledge of Allegiance. And I want to clarify that it is not Spring Lake Park, it’s St. Louis Park… It is part of our city law to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and we will continue to have it on the agenda until the foreseeable future.

Leave it to conservatives to be so angry about something so pointless that they don’t even bother taking a second to find the right target for their rage. It’s like writing a nasty letter and just putting it in the mailbox without an address. They don’t care who receives it. They just need the world to know they’re furious.

St. Louis Park should stick to its guns about dropping the Pledge. And then Spring Lake Park should follow suit and change its own rules. Just to make those haters feel like they did something useful.
