Yesterday, a new episode of the children’s cartoon Arthur revolved around the mystery of who the main characters’ third-grade teacher, Mr. Ratburn, was marrying. They found out at the wedding that he wasn’t marrying the woman they suspected. Instead, it was another man.
The best part about the episode is that once the kids figure out who Mr. Ratburn is marrying, they move on with their lives. They’re happy that he’s happy. The show doesn’t dwell on the same-sex marriage aspect, nor is it condemned. They just present it as is. Because that’s how it should be.
Naturally, some Christians are treating this normalization of something perfectly normal as an existential threat. Creationist Ken Ham said on Twitter that PBS was untrustworthy and that the “evil one is out to capture your kids & pervert their minds.”
I guess he’s never been inside Ark Encounter…
Leave it to a real man depicting fiction to get scandalized by fiction depicting reality. Imagine how bigoted you have to be to get this worked up about the love life of a cartoon rat. (I’m surprised he didn’t go with the bestiality angle, to be honest…)
