This is a Brilliant Way to Cover a Local Appearance by Creationist Kent Hovind

Vision Baptist Church in Mississippi plans to bring in Creationist Kent Hovind as a guest speaker this weekend. That isn’t necessarily news. Southern Baptist churches love their Creationists. It’s also not news that a local newspaper would cover his appearance.

What’s newsworthy is how Beth Bunch of HubCitySPOKES makes sure her readers know all the relevant details about Hovind — and it starts with the use of his mugshot for the cover image.

Vision Baptist Church has invited Dr. Kent Hovind, an American Christian fundamentalist evangelist and convicted felon, to conduct a Creation Science Seminar April 6 and 7 at the church…

Hovind, who was found guilty on all counts of a 58-count indictment, spent 10 years as a federal inmate in Berlin, N.H., for tax evasion, obstructing federal agents, and structuring cash transactions, is seen as a controversial figure by many, especially the Young Earth creationist movement, whose ministry focuses on denial of scientific theories in the fields of biology (evolution), geophysics and cosmology.

Bunch explains that church members learned about Hovind through Ken Ham and their goal was to warn people about the prevalence of evolution (oh no!)… but then she goes on to list some of Hovind’s other insanely wacky ideas. Here’s just one of the bullet points:

His creationist presentations have asserted that creationism is not taught in public schools due to a New World Order conspiracy, established by Satan and involving Ted Turner and Jane Fonda, the British Royal Family, the State of Israel, the American Civil Liberties Union, U.S. government officials, business leaders, and social activists.

I love it. It’s honest, it’s the full story, and it’s a brilliant way to let readers know that his beliefs about Creationism are are absurd as his other conspiracy theories.

The only mistake I can find is that she referred to him as “Dr. Kent Hovind”… when the reality is that his degree comes from the unaccredited Patriot Bible University, and his doctoral thesis began with the line, “Hello, my name is Kent Hovind.” Inquiring minds deserve to know that.

But other than that, she really nailed his biography.
