CNN Analyst Blasts Rick Santorum for Hypocrisy of Defending Immoral Donald Trump

On CNN yesterday, legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin took conservative Catholic Rick Santorum to task for continuing to defend Donald Trump despite all the evidence of his lies. Santorum, of course, has always been known as a defender of so-called morality. He famously condemned homosexuality, redefining his name in the process.

So for Santorum to defend Trump on the day when we learned he was well aware of the payments to silence the porn star and model with whom he had affairs? It doesn’t get more hypocritical than that, and Toobin let loose on Anderson Cooper 360.

SANTORUM: To me, the most damaging thing is the fact that the president hasn’t come clean over the course of time.

TOOBIN: Anderson, Anderson, Anderson. Putting aside the whole issue of how amazing it is to listen to Rick Santorum, who made his entire career — successful for a time — on the basis of morality in politics, making excuses for paying off porn stars and women with whom you’ve had affairs, putting that to one side, isn’t the reason…

SANTORUM: Jeffrey, you’re not going to put that to the side. I’m not making excuses for Donald Trump having an affair with a porn star. I mean, that’s disgusting, that’s tawdry. I’m addressing the question as to what is the illegality involved here, and the illegality is not the contribution. The illegality is not reporting it. I’m not condoning it. And don’t suggest that I am.

TOOBIN: … Isn’t the reason he’s lying because he did something bad in the first place?

Santorum isn’t condoning the affairs themselves, no, but he’s covering for the president in a way he would never do if we were talking about Bill Clinton.

This is what religious Republican hypocrisy looks like. Santorum has no problem looking the other way and focus on technical details about legality… when, in any other situation, he would be lamenting the deterioration of society and calling for the president to step down for poisoning the culture.

Suddenly, he doesn’t care about that. Gay people in a monogamous relationship are awful to him, but he’ll gladly defend the guy who has five children with three wives. Like a good Catholic.
