Before Donald Trump took part in the White House’s ceremonial tree lighting last night, Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke introduced him as “the man who brought Christmas back to America.”
This is shocking to those of us who celebrated Christmas last year. And the year before that. And the year before that. And to those of us who had no idea that Barack Obama had officially canceled the holiday.
Of course this is all just another lie white evangelical Christians love to tell themselves. As if Trump saying “Merry Christmas,” and pretending that the phrase was censored in some meaningful way before he got into office, marks some kind of break from tradition.
None of that is true. But it’s just one of the many ways conservative Christians rationalize their support for a man who continues to do everything in his power to delegitimize evangelical Christianity to outsiders by constantly lying, obstructing justice, covering up his affairs, ordering tear gas to be launched at migrants, tearing kids away from their parents, and reveling in his own ignorance.
You know. Just like Jesus would.
