Yesterday, Focus on the Family sent an email to its mailing list urging people to contact their senators in support of Brett Kavanaugh.
The only mention of the sexual misconduct allegations? This paragraph buried well into the letter:
Judge Kavanaugh strongly denies 11th hour allegations of sexual misconduct recently made public — allegations held secretly by Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) since July.
That’s it. He’s the Best. Nominee. Ever.… As long as you ignore the whole “attempted rape” thing.
By the way, the only reason the allegations were secret was because Dr. Christine Blasey Ford didn’t want her life ruined over what she figured was a foregone conclusion — her name was made public on her own terms only after media outlets were on the verge of outing her anyway. This wasn’t some liberal conspiracy.
When you go to the petition that Focus on the Family wants you to sign via that email, there’s absolutely no mention of how Kavanaugh was accused of assault, much less how he “held her down with the weight of his body,” turned up the music in a room so no one would hear what was happening, or how he covered up her mouth so no one could hear her scream.
Focus on the Family thinks sexual assault is something they can just gloss over — and they want people to tell their senators to confirm him without informing them, fully, of why he has become such a controversial nominee.
None of this should be surprising to anyone who’s followed the world of white evangelical Christianity over the past several years. White evangelicals supported Donald Trump despite his proud boasts of pussy-grabbing, they support Roy Moore despite allegations of molesting a 14-year-old girl, and they’re doing it again now. All while megachurch leaders are being rightly criticized and brought down over their own abusive pasts.
You can’t “thoughts and prayer” your way out of rape allegations. You have to take them seriously and demand they be investigated… or you do what Focus on the Family is doing and assume no one will give a damn if a woman was assaulted if it means pushing a conservative onto the Supreme Court so that he can force himself onto even more women by eliminating abortion rights.
For a group whose only saving grace is promoting the idea of a traditional family, they don’t ever care about half the members in it.
