The latest video in the excellent YouTube series “Exodus: the Wandering Generation” features a woman named Gloria Beth talking about how and why she became an evangelical Christian. (A second video will talk about how she left.)
The reason she became an evangelical at all had to do with helping her mother overcome an addiction. A friend told her Jesus was the solution — and she figured the other options weren’t working, so why not? Her time with Campus Crusade for Christ gave her a sense of fulfillment, even when they tried to push her away from her same-sex attractions. I’ll be interested in seeing what actually drove her away from the group and the faith.
There is one takeaway that seems really important, though. Gloria Beth says it really hurts when people tell her now that she was never really a Christian. Yes she was. She felt it. She believed it. It’s disingenuous for people to claim she was never truly faithful just because she knows better now.
